Overview - Zone 3 Preschool
Nearly 13,000 people (half of these are children) call the Guatemala City Dump Communities home, in that their homes are surrounded by millions of pounds of garbage. Stray dogs, parasites, the smell of methane gas, no running water and no sewer system is the daily reality for these families. Most make their living at the dump, searching the garbage for food, recyclables and other discarded items which they can sell, re-purpose or use.
Hope Renewed’s Response
Hope Renewed is focused on one specific community among the several around the City Dump. The core of our effort in this community is the Hope Renewed Preschool. Understanding the importance of education to the future, Hope Renewed opened the school in 2012. The school began in the community center built with the help of mission teams and members of the community. We started with only 35 kids enrolled in this accredited program. The numbers continued to grow as the need in the community grew, so that we eventually outgrew the first school and moved into our current facility where our Executive Director and 4 awesome teachers serve, equip and empower close to 60 children each day. Partnering with Planting Seeds International, our teaching methodology mirrors the commitment of all our programs in developing the whole person. The curriculum’s focus is to teach children how to read and write AND how to build life skills such as cooperation, team work, critical thinking, creativity and problem solving.

Continue to build upon relationships with the families of the children we serve, equip and empower
Fund a daily nutritious breakfast for the preschool students
LONG TERM GOALS:
Build community and sponsorship opportunities between Hope Renewed Preschool classes and Preschool classes in the US
Formalize a partnership plan for kids aging out of Hope Renewed Preschool
Follow children who have aged out of Hope Renewed Preschool and gather data on current success due to the early childhood intervention they received

Covid19 has impacted the people of Zone 3 particularly hard. Vaccination rates remain very low. However, the kids returned to the preschool full time in September 2022. We are excited to start the 2023 school year fully enrolled and in person Monday thru Thursday.
