Overview - Hope Renewed Scholarships

Hope Renewed Scholarships are made available to any students in Guatemala who are motivated to continue their education or return to school, even after a long absence. Most scholarship recipients are located in La Limonada, the largest ghetto slum in Central America. It is estimated that 75,000-100,000 people live around a Ravine in La Limonada, most living in extreme poverty without running water or electricity. Because of its reputation for violence and crime, most good people in La Limonada are discriminated against, especially when it comes to employment. Unlike the dump communities in Zone 3, there are not many organizations working with the La Limonada community.

Hope Renewed’s Response

Hope Renewed International manages a two-tiered scholarship program. In the first tier, we provide books and school supplies for students who are unable to afford them. In the second tier, we provide partial or full scholarships to adults who wish to go back to school at whatever level. We also provide scholarships for adolescents wishing to continue their studies after grade 6 when the government stops paying for school and, on a smaller scale, we provide special education services for students who cannot afford special schooling. By convincing adults and adolescents of the importance of their education, we have seen this value trickle down to current and future families and have seen communities begin to transform.

Students in the program must maintain a “B” average with no grade in any class lower than a “C.” Scholars must attend scholarship meetings to show completion of work and grade status, as well as to request and receive supplies. There are currently 26 elementary children receiving books and supplies, 23 adults and adolescents receiving full or partial scholarships and 1 child’s enrollment in a special school for autism. Adult and adolescent scholars study at high schools, vocational schools, and universities.
