Overview - THE SEWING center

While the unemployment rate in Guatemala is low (2.8% as reported by the World Bank), underemployment is a significant problem, with 54% of the population living below the poverty line, and 13% in extreme poverty.

Hope Renewed’s Response

The DSF Sewing Center opened at Hope Center in 2021 to offer free sewing classes. The sewing students are from at-risk communities and receive training and education in the production of retail apparel and home goods. They learn a marketable skill that affords them new opportunities in their own communities to make alterations, sell their creations, or pursue a job in the garment industry.

Formal instruction occurs once a week. The students return to practice the skills multiple times a week! We are anxious to see these students use their sewing skills to provide for their families, develop confidence in their abilities and flourish in their communities.
